I have been doing research on the correlation between physical fitness and mental health. Dr. Gilmartin, author of Emotional survival for law enforcement (2002), suggested Spark: The revolutionary new science of exercise and the brain by Dr. John Ratey (2013). This book has impacted my research and my life. As a profession there is no question as to the role of physical fitness in the physical side of the job, but what about its effects on how our minds cope with the stress. What do we do with the information that is pouring in concerning the correlation between physical and mental health? Do we fight for time to complete conditioning sessions? Do we make a physical conditioning regimen compulsory? What would that look like? If physical fitness is truly important what stance do we take on its implementation within the profession? These are questions that are going to take debate, research and time to be able to answer properly. The face of Law Enforcement is changing. We must adapt to the changes on our own or we will forced to make changes that may not be the best for us, or more importantly the communities we serve. ▬ What is your Azimuth?
