I have been doing some thinking (which is not always a good thing). Seems to me a woman outlives her usefulness at around 60 years old. You bear children, you raise them, you hopefully have made them strong enough to be independent and able to begin a good life of their own. You welcome your Grandchildren into the world and hopefully make a mark with them. You ferry kids and grandkids to Doctors appointments, dentist appointments, sports events, friends homes, school activities, family functions -endlessly. You host birthday parties, Christmases, Thanksgiving dinners, get togethers. While your life is chaos and non stop excitement and bedlam, you are useful. The moment that slows down, so do the phone calls, the invitations, the visits. Your usefulness has waned and you no longer matter. Thank God I have a hobby that is rewarding and helps me feel fulfilled, because in human terms (with family, anyway) I am at the cusp of my expiry date. I know my Mom felt exactly this way too and am grateful I was right next door and at times needy, so she would get a glimmer of feeling useful from time to time. Mom...I am so sorry I did not understand this while you were alive. Now I get it and it stinks.
