I have been fortunate to know many amazing women thus far, not the least of which were my two incredible grandmothers. Though it took many years to appreciate it, their collective & individual strength helped make me who I am today. Im so grateful and blessed to have received your love, your wisdom, your charity, and your home-cooked meals. I thank God for you. Today, my dads mother Sally Smith, aka Sara Jones, made her transition. It hurts; as a family, we hurt. Im glad you went in peace. Im comforted to know that youve joined my grandfather and other loved ones who have passed, and that youll now being watching over us from above. Thank you for your spunk, your strong will, your sense of humor. I love you. I wrote this poem in 2009 when my beloved cousin Susan passed, and wanted to share today. Our family - imperfect, flawed, broken; oft misguided, unfocused, unsure. Yet also resilient, God fearing, united. Where there is imperfection, there is also acceptance; Where there is pain, also laughter; Where there is transgression, also forgiveness; Where there is heartache, also compassion. I wish we had more time, more occasion to be together. Many of you, so familiar; some of you, like strangers. Yet there is a comfort in knowing we share a bond, formed by memories of the past, awareness of the present and hope for the future. We are separated by distance and time, but we endure; united by love and shared histories. In spite of the pain of death, there is also the joy of youth and innocent. Life carries on. Family represents those you love, and sometimes loathe. Those you laugh with and cry with; those you fight with and fellowship with. Those you turn to in moments of need, when no other will suffice. There are no others like family. I love you all 27-Nov-09
