I have been given the distinct honor this coming Wednesday, of preaching the funeral for our sister-in-law, Shelby Cain. She was married to Myrlenes brother, Roy Cain for 55 years, and for 50 years they pastored 7 different Church of God congregations in Arkansas (one of them twice). Shelby was the pastors wife at Beouff River Church of God in Eudora, Arkansas, when my brother George and I, as teenagers, started attending YPE (Young Peoples Endeavor) services on Saturday nights. It was there that I fell for the love of my life--the pastors younger sister (and his piano player), Myrlene. On one occasion, while Myrl and I were engaged, and I was away preaching a revival, a young single evangelist came to our church, and made a determined effort to steal my girl. He didnt succeed (of COURSE not!!!), and Shelby was heard to say, I wouldnt trade one Eddie (thats me) for a THOUSAND -__________s (name withheld--he might be a FB friend!!). What a SMART lady she was!!! Roy married Myrlene and me--his first wedding as a young pastor. In the early days, the four of us were together almost everywhere. Roy and I preached for each other, shared sermon notes, and we traveled and stayed together at camp meetings, prayer conferences, and the General Assembly. To be honest, I cannot tell emotionally that we are in laws. Lady Myrl and I were so young when we married, her siblings and their spouses are as mine as mine are. Their two children, Tonda and Tony were always as if they were also ours! Shelbys life revolved around her husband, children, grandchildren, and church. She loved to play piano and sing, and instilled that in her children. Her daughter Tonda, and Tondas daughter Alex, and son Kane, will sing at the funeral. It wont be a morbid memorial! It will be a celebration of the life of one whose last words were spoken as praises to her Lord. But we will need your prayers. Lady Myrl and I will leave for Arkansas tomorrow morning!
