I have been invited, by Sara Imbruglio, to share 10 books that have affected me. The parameters: In your status, list 10 books that have stayed with you in some way. Dont take more than a few minutes and do not think too hard. They dont have to the be right books or great works of literature - just ones that have affected you in some way. Tag [10] friends including me so I can see what you read. Ive listed these in no order. I call yall out in the comments. 1. Dune by Frank Herbert - What is there to say about Dune that hasnt been said yet? This is the best book ever written. Every time I read it, I get something different out of it. A book on politics at one moment, on ecology the next. The tale of Paul MuaDib is the all-encompassing search for a Messiah, and in so doing change the universe. My favorite quote? My name is a killing word (Paul) 2. House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski- This brilliant book is the sum of experimental fiction to date. It will make you look at the dark a completely different way. It is truly terrifying on many levels. I fully suggest you read this during the day. Its a staggering work. 3. Enders Game by Orson Scott Card- While OSC is a terrible person, this is one of the best Sci-Fi books ever. If you havent read it yet, its time. Dont let anyone tell you about it either. Skip the movie. 4. Blue Oasis by unknown- So I read this book when I was really young, and I made me love reading. Its about the future, a future where Hanford is about to blow up. it basically made me love dystopias from an early age. I wish I could find any information about it so I can read it again. 5.World War Z by Max Brooks This book is a grand tour of our zombie future. Written as interviews with the survivors of the zombie apocalypse, this is such good one. I couldnt put it down. 6. Collapse by Jared Diamond- This book tracks several of the cultures in the world that have failed over their lifetimes. For example, Diamond discusses Vinland, a Viking outpost in Canada. He delineates the causes of Vinlands collapse and how it applies to us, now. Its really, really haunting. 7. Snow Crash and Anathem by Neal Stephenson- Anathem and Snow Crash are totally killer cyberpunk epics. These books are both awesome. I wrote a song about some of the characters from Anathem. 8. Lord Of The Rings by JRR Tolkien- One of the most metal epics of all time. Nuff said. 9. Moby Dick by Herman Melville- Call me Ishmael this book shreds so hard. The battle against the white whale is the battle we all face at some point. My ivory leg is what propels me! A classic in every sense. Get to it! 10.Neuromancer by William Gibson - Cyberpunk as a genre is possibly my favorite sci-fi flavor. Its a genre that describes what could have been at that moment if the future was happening right then. I like lining up was possible in fiction in 1986 with what never happened now. I think like Fallout: New Vegas this is dystopia that could have been and maybe should have been. Its impossible to read William Gibson books and not imagine the scene he sets. This brutal future is similar to the hallucinationary warnings in the film Hackers, in that the stylized hacker-bounty hunter hybrid was the ultimate hero against a massive monolithic zeitgeist of corporate control. The mere fact that Gibson invented the term Cyberspace among other concepts firmly ensconced Gibson in our collective awareness. Read his stuff.
