I have been nominated by my cousin, Maria Bitonti, to participate in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Thank you, I appreciate the efforts put forth by millions for a good cause. However, here is why I don’t feel it is appropriate for me to participate: Because I am aware that dumping cold water on myself won’t make a difference. Because I am aware that my home state of California --the ninth largest agricultural economy in the world and which provides about half of our countrys fruit and veg-- is facing one of the most detrimental droughts it has ever seen, threatening our food supply. I am aware that roughly 750 Million people in the world do not have access to safe water. This is roughly one in ten of the worlds population. I am aware that every year, 3.4 Million people die from a water related disease. I am aware that every 21 Seconds, a child dies from a water-related illness. So I just dont feel right dumping a bucket of this precious resource on my head. Don’t get me wrong, I am also aware of the terrible effects of Lou Gerhig’s Disease and appreciate that so many have done something so extreme in the name of challenging this terrible disease. Create awareness, but please, just #bemoreaware. So, instead of pouring ice cold water on myself, I will split my donation between ALS and give the other half to Water For People . I challenge anyone who is sensible enough to do the same (I wont put anybody on the spot) and hope that we will inspire others. :) https://waterforpeople.org/
