I have been seeing a few posts on how its not honest to comp an image of the blood moon into your photo across a few posts here on facebook and at other image sharing sites. In an effort to defend it, I will gladly admit that my latest image is a comp of three separate images to create the effect I was after. While out in the field (I took all three shots from the same location) I did sight measurements by eye at the tower so I could reproduce what my 11mm lens could not. By doing this, I made the moon visually the same size as what I was seeing in person to create a size representation of what I saw. Of course the sky didnt look so blue (a byproduct of doing a 20 second long exposure) and the rust and teal hues of the tower only showed up on the image file because of my light painting it with my flashlight. The moon if I left it the size my 11mm lens made it would have looked like a bright star in the sky. So... yeah, keeping it real and false all at the same time. The moon is probably the most honest part of the image. If I kept it true all the way, the sky would have been more of a dark grey with a hint of blue and the tower and foreground would have been a silhouette for the most part. The image would have had very little wow factor and I wouldnt have liked it much myself. I did keep the moon in the same exact location, so that there is a element of it being what happened last night. This is what the being an artist part of photography is all about, and in many ways adds to the fun of going out in the wee hours and not getting any sleep for the following 12 hours (so far). ;) I hope this explains the motives and the whys of my picture. Its been great seeing so many takes on it. Cheers! ~M@
