I have been thinking about something off-and-on all day today. - TopicsExpress

I have been thinking about something off-and-on all day today. Last night we had folks over for our Upper Room community group, and at the end of a beautiful evening, as we were talking and cleaning the kitchen, a young man who is visiting from Sierra Leone asked me, Is that a dishwasher? I told him it was, and I asked if he had ever seen one before. He told me no but he figured that is what it was. He proceeded to tell me about the impoverished conditions in which he lived in his country. I thought about how I had previously looked at my 12-year-old dishwasher and said to myself I really want a new one. And so today, I asked myself if I am truly grateful for all that I have. I know how blessed I am, and I try to live into gratitude but there are so many vain desires that prove me to be not so grateful. I know it is in part because of the society in which I was born into. I realize I am from a culture where many of us have more than enough (and for that I am truly grateful), and we are accustomed to being wasteful and in a perpetual state of wanting. Gratitude is really a process, and a practice. It is like a muscle that has to be exercised; and the heart will eventually strengthen. Today, I ask God for an authentically grateful heart--one where I acknowledge Him everywhere and in everything, and savor each blessing. I am thankful for a great lesson that came in the form of a simple question, Is that a dishwasher? #awakening #365DOG
