I have been volunteering many hours recently at the media center of S2s school, assisting with inventory. Its been hours of one of my favorite library tasks: shelf reading. In biographies, two were completely irresistible and I had to stop to read them! Both slim and large format, the subjects were Andy Warhol and Anne Bonny & Mary Reid. I thought Oh my! What are we saying to the children about these folks? What can you say in a childrens picture book biography? And then I read them. The beautiful surprise? I learned something from both. While what one would expect to be ignored was ignored, both had interesting bits of information that I did not know. I found the direct and simple discussion of Andys art to be very enjoyable and amazingly well-suited to the subject! My lesson learned: Changing ones perspective can change ones perspective. The next time you are researching a person, may I suggest you sit in one of the little chairs and read a picture book biography? I think I should write a series of them on the Romantics.
