“I have come to bring fire to the earth” As part of its “Toughest Place to be a…” series, the BBC sent a UK firefighter to the Amazon to experience the difficulties his counterparts face there. The programme seemed to demonstrate the sheer futility of man’s effort to try and quench raging, out of control forests fires. The fire of the Spirit that Jesus is speaking about can never be quenched. Reigning in our hearts, even the smallest flame of this fire, has the potential to set the whole world alight. Whether we’re called to marriage, priesthood or religious life, if we are faithful to our calling, we will spread this life-giving, purifying, refreshing fire, for the sake of building up the Kingdom of God.
