I have come to the conclusion (probably later than most) that republicans simply do NOT like themselves. Yes, they have a HUGE ego but little self esteem. (Yes, they are TWO different things and certainly mutually exclusive). They also HATE everyone else but it has to start somewhere and it is with themselves. They are basically angry, bitter, disillusioned, unaccepting of the different, closed-minded (the very definition of conservative), wanting what was (mostly a white America with women and blacks who knew their place). Since I have gone on and on about how much I love Amsterdam, one of the things I enjoyed most was this: NOT everybody was blonde and blue eyed: There was lots and lots of color (and I dont mean in the tulips). Blacks, middle eastern, Spaniards, gays in every size and shape. It was a cornucopia of humanity with something I had not normally seen anywhere: THEY WERE SMILING...A LOT! Their attitudes were ridiculously positive. In a chat with some Dutch folks, when the topic turned to money, they could NOT understand someone having $30 million while another had nothing. That concept went completely against their grain and very being. Some Americans are consumed by the concept that were better than all other countries. My God! While yes, we are better than some (Cuba, Somalia, Russia and Iran), we are certainly NOT better than OTHER western democracies. And the very concept itself of BEING BETTER, I find repulsive. Its the old my $hit doesnt stink but yours does perception, personified to the power of 1000. No, your $hit smells just like mine and you are better in some ways and worse in others. In other words, it should be like a good marriage: Some days the wife does 70% and the husband 30%. Other days, its reversed. At the end of the day, its shared. If ever, ONE person does 100%, its a sick relationship and doomed for failure. And so is the twisted notion that has been driven into us beginning with the Reagan Administration that we are better than ALL OTHER COUNTRIES. No, as individuals, we are not. And certainly our government is not.
