I have finally figured out what has been bothering me about the Ray Rice controversy. We keep hearing how horrible it is that Rice punched his now wife, then fiance in the face and knocked her out. The problem is not that Rice hit a woman; it is that Rice punched a human being in the head. It is wrong for anybody to attack anybody else the way Ray Rice hit Janay Palmer. Women are not some special sub-species of humanity and we need to quit treating them like they are. Rice would have been just as wrong it he had hit anybody in that elevator. Stop denigrating women by saying that they are weaker or treating them like they need special protection. Start punishing people like Ray Rice for assaulting a person; any person. As long as we treat violence against women like it is some how different that other forms of violence there will always be idiots that try to excuse this shit as some form of marital strife instead of what it is. And assault on another person by a violently out of control asshole.
