I have finally finished canning my tomatoes. What a challenge to - TopicsExpress

I have finally finished canning my tomatoes. What a challenge to get crushed tomatoes with no seeds. I put them through the food processor first, I then used a small colander with very tiny holes and stirred the tomatoes which allowed the crushed tomato pulp to go through, but not the seeds. I would end up with a lot of pulp in the seeds so I repeated the process. I tried cheese cloth, it allowed the seeds through. I doubled it thinking that would work but again the seeds would squeeze through with the pulp. There are non-electrical machines that do the same thing and I plan to own one prior to canning tomatoes this summer. It also works with apples for making applesauce. The food processor could be left in the cabinet during the entire canning season. That would be wonderful. I have ordered my seeds and have received one order. I am waiting on the second one. Our weather is still on a roller coaster, very cool to cold one day to being very warm the next. I will begin seeding down tomorrow which means I will be having to maintain a fire in the stove during the night and some days until our weather gets warmer both day and night. I will be doing my cool weather crops first, they will be going out into the garden as soon as they are big enough to do so. I will be making row covers in the event we should have a frost or freeze which is highly possible. We had our last freeze last year in May. That is not common but with the unusual winter we have had it is hard to determine what to expect. In some ways it feels as though it has been a very long time since last years garden, in other ways it seems it wasnt long ago. In any case I am excited and looking forward to getting back in the green house and getting the garden planted as early as is possible this year. This year I plan to grow vegetables, herbs and flowers. The cold weather actually caused our chickens to stop laying completely. That was devastating. We put them on a higher protein food and electrolytes. I also gave them a strong garlic water for two days. They did begin laying again and are laying better than before the cold weather. Spring is almost here and it will be very welcome. Till next time, take care. CAro
