I have friends in various former Soviet countries. I need a visa (and the process is often a pain) to visit Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan etc. My friends in those places need a visa (and the process is often a pain) to visit the UK, or the Schengen zone. If we all want to hang out together, there are a cluster of countries where none of us need visas (or the visa process is trivial), and we can all go to hang out. Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Armenia, Turkey, Montenegro, and a couple of other places in the Balkans. The desirability of these as holiday destinations is variable, but my compliments to those countries for the lack of bullshit.
