I have had a very privileged life. In my travels across the world, this tiny city-island-state will pretty much always be home in my heart. Whilst it has many pressing issues to deal with in the present - population, inequality, social welfare, housing prices, fertility, partisanism, transport, education, opportunity, speech and viability... I am glad to say that the vast majority of my problems here are truly first world ones. We are reasonably safe from war, religious conflict, violence, sectarianism, deadly epidemics, poverty, environmental destruction and corruption that I have seen, studied, read about or experienced in my travels. When most of my troubles are tied to driving, parking, cycling, the weather, slow service, dating, getting good pictures or just plain shitty people; overall, life here is really good. Happy 49th Birthday Singapore. Not too long ago we were condemned for an existence of failure and grinding poverty, and while it will never be perfect here, I hope that everyone can give back something to build a better society on all fronts, despite our disagreements.
