I have had it brought to my attention that their are some people who believe we have been breeding these horses. I want to reassure everyone that this is not the case. This new herd that we took in was exposed to a stud that was allowed to run free with the herd, the breeder also did not believe in gelding. So all the mares that came in have already been covered except for those who were under a year. The stud colts that came in are going to be gelded by the end of the month. Just so it is more than clear we do not breed any rescue horse and geld all studs as soon as possible keeping them away from any open mares. I know I speak for myself and the rest of the board when I say true rescues do not breed. If we could afford it we would spay the mares but thats a 1000 dollar price tag, so we will have to settle for gelding and no breeding contracts for now. I would also like to address the comment that we all keep seeing all over the boards if you cant afford them on your own, why did you rescue them? We are a public charity, that means we run on donations, no position is a paid position at the rescue. There has been several years where the rescue has not received enough donations and in those circumstances the horses do not starve. The founders and volunteers reach deep in their own pockets to make sure no one goes hungry. That being said we operate on the same charitable base as the humane society, and so many other dog and cat rescues only difference is we rescue horses. We receive no state or federal backing, we have not been lucky enough to receive a grant, so we do ask for donations so we can continue to give these animals who are starving, abused, or just unlucky enough to have nowhere to go when their family falls on hard time, the very basic care of food, shelter, vet and farrier care. Are we perfect No! But we try to learn from our mistakes, and fill avoid, care for and train these animals to the best of our abilities and then find them loving forever homes.
