I have had the privilege of working with and meeting with some of the most famous horsemen of my time. As I think about them, as a group, the one most striking aspect is their complete dysfunction. I am not taking about or being critical about their riding or training as such. That aside, as human beings, as a group these guys are the most messed up folks. I actually did not think about it until last night but it is true. Is it any wonder that the work with the horse is so screwed up? Certainly, my limited exposure may not be a definitive statement about upper level trainers and riders but it does give me pause to think. All of them are peacocks of a sort and most down right neurotic and many with serious substance abuse. Many are despised by their own families. Most have pretty good social skills. They are charming but screwed up. The exceptions are rare. These are the people who are telling us how to train. How does that work out?
