I have had to lovely artistic experiences this weekend. Last night I saw Alive Inside the documentary about the effect of music on Alzheimers/Dementia patients. It was stunning. Such a joyful and hopeful movie. AND Friday night I saw a terrific play called Gees Bend wonderfully directed by Emily Scott Banks and acted. It was about many things, and takes places in the 30s and 60s. It is set in Gees Bend in Alabama and we see the beautiful quilts made by the African American women as both a way to express themselves and functionally keep their families warm. These quilts ones day make it into museums and there is a book showing them in the lobby of the theater. In so many ways this play for me was about beauty. The singing was so rich and beautiful, as were the quilts. It unfortunately has a short run so get your tickets now! aareptheater/main.html?src=%2F
