I have heard more discussion lately about the civil rights movement and lots of parents asking about how to talk to their kids about it and what to read and watch...so, here it goes....jump in anyone else who has more suggestions. Childrens books Martins Big Words by Doreen Rappaport When Marian Sang by Pam Munoz Ryan and Brian Selznick Only Passing Through: The Story of Sojourner Truth by Anne Rockwell The Watsons Go to Birmingham 1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis A Sweet Smell of Roses by Angela Johnson Rosa by Nikki Giovanni The Story of Ruby Bridges by Robert Coles Child of the Civil Rights Movement by Paula Young Shelton Mississippi Morning by Ruth Vander Zee Movies Selma, Lord, Selma- awesome Disney educational movie...they did a great job and tell the story from the eyes of a child The Color of Friendship- different era but great conversation starter with children about race...I also believe that this is a Disney educational movie.
