I have just been reduced to tears by mama Kota Nomfanelo. I was awoken an hour ago by someone who is following my page. He sent me a message pleading for help. He is a resident of one of the 700 villages around Cofimvaba in the Eastern Cape. His teenage sister has been experiencing severe labour pains only 6 months into her pregnancy. They called the ambulance to come and get her but after waiting for many hours, mobilised a private car to take her to hospital. Upon arrival there, they discovered about 5 ambulance vehicles parked outside, doing nothing. The family had to use a trolley to ferry her into the hospital. By this time, the young girl was experiencing seizures. As if this is not cruel enough, the family was ridiculed by health officials at the hospital for rushing for someone who has seizures. To them, this is not serious. I did not know what to do at 5am in the morning, so I quickly got hold of mama Nomfanelo, the Government Spokesperson of the Eastern Cape province, who immediately contacted the family and has been assisting them. She is also meeting the MEC of Health, Dr Phumza Dyantyi, this afternoon, to get to the bottom of this issue. As we speak, the young lady is on her way to the East London Hospital. Heads must roll. This cannot continue. The dignity of our people is perpetually being pissed on by lazy and incompetent officials with no regard for Black life. That a family had to wait for hours when there were ambulance vehicles available is a travesty. But more than this, that a family had to ferry its child with a trolley, A TROLLEY, into a hospital because no one cared is the height of cruelty. What have our people done to deserve being treated like animals by health officials? What have the poor masses of this country done that they must ferry their sick into hospitals with trolleys? Still, I am thankful that we still have people like mama Nomfanelo, who can be woken up at 5am to intervene in such crises. She did not say It is too early in the morning to be working, please contact me later. She took the numbers of the family that I gave her and she worked. She is now up busy helping this family. We need more leaders like mama Nomfanelo, leaders who are accessible to ordinary masses of our people. The Eastern Cape government is blessed to have this woman and I hope it knows! In that woman, we have a peoples servant in every sense of the word. Enkosi mama!
