I have just finished two excellent biographies of two astonishing Tudor women: Lady Margaret Beaufort and her granddaughter-in-law, Queen Katherine Parr. Both women tend to be overshadowed, unfairly, by the drama of Henry VIIIs reign and the controversy of his first two marriages. However, they were both remarkable women who were translators of religious works. They were patrons of Oxbridge colleges and, in the case of Lady Margaret, founders. They interacted with intellectuals, keenly administered their estates, and were proponents of the Renaissance. They did all of this amidst dancing, socialising and making Merry at the royal court. Lady Margaret and Queen Katherine certainly were two of the most remarkable and enterprising women of the age.
