I have just heard read, on CBC As It Happens, Oscar Wildes beautiful story The Selfish Giant. Besides it being in itself perfect and beautiful, my very personal memory of this story is from my reading it aloud, when I was nineteen, to a very aged lady in the infirmary of King Bruwaert House, near Hinsdale, Illinois, and about a miles walk from the house in which I grew up. Being in the presence of this woman is the sort of experience anyone with even modest sensibilities would remember for the rest of ones life. She was pure love, emanating from a very small and frail body. Reading Wildes tale of divine love to her was very like what I would imagine repeating Gods heart, in words, to God, would be like. All of that beautifully heart-rending experience has returned to me, hearing the story read again this evening. I am overwhelmed with love and gratitude.
