I have news for those who think that a leap into the unknown is preferable to the status quo. I can list about 30 foreign countries scattered over the planet that I have spent some time in (from 2 weeks, through several months, up to 7 years). Not a single one of them is a patch on the United Kingdom - even in the tattered state it is in now. I visited South Africa several times in the 2 years up to and year after apartheid. I can assure you Scots people are not treated the way non-white africans were treated back then. Alex Salmond clearly has no direct experience of what his statements mean. The British Isles is a fragile cultural eco-system - I will confess to being horrified at the prospect of its breakup. Especially when logic has been abandoned and replaced with a xenophobic hatred for Westminster. Westminster is not responsible for the problems of scotland - IMHO - the conservatives are. And we, the electorate, for electing them. The referendum is not a general election. A Yes vote does not mean that you are against the Tories - a Yes vote means that you wish to dismantle a uniquely British construct on the basis that you believe that an independent scotland will benefit its citizens more than the Union. I would say that that it is unknown - and judging by my debates with people in the Yes camp - so do they. Having been in countries (like Russia and Poland) that have recently launched themselves into the unknown. And to others like former African colonies, India and Pakistan - where the legacy of rushed power transfer is evident ubiquitously. To see a Scotland that is independant, proud and free would be great. To see one that is independent, proud free and utterly bankrupt would be heartbreaking. So if theres a good offer that buys some time to think things through clearly - take it.
