I have no ability to take away the ugliness of the past in this land I love so much called South Africa, but the hurts that still persist have certainly made an impact upon the potential for productivity and those hurts will not dissolve overnight. What is needed is for little examples and nodes of productivity to arise, and it works from the bottom up and the top down simultaneously. When people are given love, dignity and respect the workplace goes through a process of transformation and hope is reintroduced into stalemated scenarios. John E. Schrock outlines three principles of productivity which it would do us all good to take heed as beginning the process of unlocking resources- 1. Be productive: earn your way through life. 2. Manage what you produce: take care of it and maintain it. 3. Do it efficiently: measure your quantity and quality. After observing the first point, I am reminded of the old John Houseman commercial for Smith Barney brokers: “We do business the old-fashioned way – we earn it.” We do not get anything by doing nothing, neither by destroying, but through conscientious application to what we know is right.
