I have no doubt that Meryl Streep will portray La Callas with the greatness and dignity that greatest of divas deserves. Master Class is about Callas AFTER her vocal collapse. And yes! I can very easily picture Streep playing Florence Foster Jenkins! Shes great with comedy and has enough of a singing voice to emulate the sounds that Jenkins shocked the public with. After playing Julia Child, Miranda Priestly, Margaret Thatcher, Karen Silkwood, Ethel Rosenberg (and winning Emmys and Oscar nominations for all), Florence Foster Jenkins will be a perfect fit. Remember Death Becomes Her with Goldie Hawn? Or She Devil with Rosanne Arnold? There will be no Mommie Dearest moment. By the way, I think that Faye Dunnaways portrait of Joan Crawford was SO realistic that it hit a nerve in Hollywood at the time (1981) and too many of Crawfords friends were still around. The problem was that Mommie Dearest was made much too soon after Joan Crawfords death. By the way, I saw Faye Dunnaway play Callas in Master Class in Chicago in 1997 and she was superb.
