I have no idea whats true, and whats not regarding the Mark - TopicsExpress

I have no idea whats true, and whats not regarding the Mark Driscoll controversy. I am a spectator, like most others. To reiterate, because some of you assume you know what I mean to say even though I cant be more blunt when I say it, I have no problem with holding anyone accountable. I do have a problem with using moral and theological heretics to do it. For the life of me I dont understand elevating heretics as valid sources on church discipline and accountability. No other era of Christendom wouldve done such a thing, and youll never convince me otherwise. Yes, God used pagan nations to punish His covenant people Israel, but the thoughts of the Assyrians, Babylonians, and Philistines on Gods Word and Law werent sought and werent publicized to Gods people even if they were offered. In fact, those instruments of punishment were then punished themselves for what they did to Gods people. Gods prophets didnt align with pagan conquerors to punish Gods people. Instead, they urged the people to repent before the pagan armies arrived. Nevertheless, clearly there are issues in his congregation given all those with former ties to it coming forward. And respected evangelical sources like World Magazine have done some reporting on this as well that is cause for pause. However, Im not a member of the congregation, have never even been to Seattle, and havent heard a Driscoll sermon in about three years. I am simply posting this not because I am taking his side, but for these two reasons: 1) Proverbs 18:17 2) Im a sucker for people willing to give contrarian opinions that go against the grain of public momentum. You can probably guess why. :-) If recent history holds, this is now the point when some of you re-interpret what I actually meant to say despite how clearly I just said it.
