I have not come to abolish but to fulfill Jesus, we - TopicsExpress

I have not come to abolish but to fulfill Jesus, we Christians often dont seem to have much appreciation for the Jewish law, and we often portray the Judaism of your time as dry, hypocritical, and legalistic. That distortion makes it hard for me to make sense of this gospel, where you tell us that not only are you not abolishing the law, you are fulfilling it. I know, Jesus, that there are people who seem to embody the very ideals they espouse. I can see in Dorothy Day or Mother Teresa the personification of your love for the poor. Is it too much to think that Christians would find in you-- in your life, death, and resurrection-- the very embodiment of the law and the prophets? For what is the law, but a way to righteousness? And what is righteousness but a close, loving relationship with God and neighbor? Isnt that the essence of the law and the prophets? Isnt that what you lived? Jesus, I do not follow the Jewish Law; I follow you, who are the embodiment and fulfillment of that law. Give me the grace to follow well, so that the world may find in me the very embodiment of your love. Amen.
