I have noticed some youths easily allow their dander to be up at the slightest provocative posts.That should not be because democracy demands not only justice and liberty but also common decency and tolerance. This is necessary because it is often a contest of ideas and reason and not a sumo ring for bull fight. So let our youths adopt democratic culture needed for our democracy to grow. As to the call by some youths that Christians should keep their distance from me because I am more a poodle to northern establishment simply because of my principled stands on some national issues,I wish to say if all northerners should avoid southerners and vice versa,there would be no more Nigeria. I am aware of the fact that President Jonathan has inveighed ethnic nationalism and religious politics on ground that they are divisive,and that patriotic Nigerians should outgrow such insular particularism in favor of national solidarity that comes with relative pluralism.Should Christians also avoid him? Our opposition to any structure of Nigeria that allows for each constituency to grow at its own pace is informed by conviction that the certain costs of such arrangement outweigh the uncertain gains.Unity that comes from balanced development is stronger. We cannot afford to allow our security challenges posed by insurgence that is minority to redefine our destiny by setting our national agenda. I agree with President Jonathan that insurgences are using religion for legitimacy of their ideology which all Nigerians must note and not play to the gallery by swallowing the bait of dividing this country along religious lines with dire consequences.
