I have permission to share this true story. Names are Changed for privacy. Traceys son Kaleb has autism. Kaleb attended a preschool for developmentally delayed children and other children with disabilities. After pre-school, he attended Mrs. Brights Kindergarten class. Mrs. Bright was a wonderful teacher. Kaleb had an IEP, but only went to the resource room once a week for 30 minutes because he had mastered the kindergarten curriculum--knowing your letters and sounds. The resource teacher, Mrs. Stern, did not follow the IEP. At first, Tracey was patient, hoping that Mrs. Stern would comply. She did not. Tracey went through certain procedures to make sure that the IEP was being met. She could have filed a complaint at that point, but she didnt. She was not one to make waves or cause a fuss. At the end of the year, Mrs. Stern said that Kaleb no longer needed an IEP or any Special Education services. Her motives were mysterious, since Kaleb would not be attending that school the following year. Tracey and the other IEP team members compromised, and agreed to give Kaleb 15 minutes of services with an aid in the regular education classroom a week. Tracey was very disheartened, knowing her son would not be recieving the help he needed. Yes, he knew his letters and sounds, but autism is a behavioral condition. Tracey found out the Mrs. Stern had written a letter before the IEP meeting was held, stating that she did not agree with the IEP. The principal told Tracey that she was well within her rights to file a complaint, especially since the IEP had not been met for a considerable amount of time. Mrs. Stern had broken the law. The complaint was filed, and an investigation followed. The intention of the investigation was to hopefully prevent this from happening to any other children.
