I have read for years that archeologists can’t make up their minds as to whether or not the Exodus really happened. I do realize that there are those that would deny anything associated with the Bible, so it is not surprising that there is controversy in this area. Therefore, when it came to my attention that there was actually a letter written right after the Exodus by an Egyptian, it caught my attention. As always, if this isn’t a subject that interests you, stop reading and go about your life. One of the reasons there isn’t much information on the disasters that happened in Egypt that led up to the pharaoh releasing the Hebrews is that the events happened 3,450 years ago and not many documents survived from that time. There were only a couple of types of people who could write. A limited amount of the elite were taught to write and this privilege was usually given to the firstborn. Or one learned to write because they were in the employ of important people in Egypt. They belonged to the ruling class as administrators or military officers. The entire Egyptian army with its officers and lower ranks followed the Hebrews to the Red Sea where they were killed. Of those scribes who remained they either had no one to work for or, more probably, Egypt was in chaos. If a country suffers a great disaster, the mot important thing is survival. Egypt had lost its entire ruling class along with its army. Whoever was left in charge would not be likely to admit defeat. The letter referred to as the Ipuwer Papyrus and it is most probably a description of the events leading up to the release of the Hebrews from Egypt. The papyrus was written during the 19th dynasty, the one that took over leadership of Egypt after the events leading up to the Exodus. The official name of the document is “Admonitions of Ipuwer”. It is one long description of a society in total crisis. It reads like a report from a war correspondent. People debate over whether this document is fictitious or describes actual events. One of the reasons they say it is fictitious is that Egypt is suffering total disaster while their slaves become rich with their former masters wealth. The problem with this argument is that this is exactly what the Bible describes as happened. (Exodus 12:33-36) More tomorrow................
