I have recently had some students asking for pronunciation help. One girl failed another Cambridge test because of her poor pronunciation. 2 others were told by their teachers that they would not pass IELTS just because of their poor pronunciation? Pronunciation is VERY important. It accounts for 25% of your speaking mark. Remember though that if the examiner CANNOT understand you, it will be very hard to get above band 4. You can use band 8 vocabulary and grammar but they wont know what you are saying. Here are some tips to help you: 1) Find out which sounds you cannot say or say incorrectly and learn and practise the correct versions. 2) Check that you are pronouncing every sound in words. 3) Analyse your word and sentence stress. Are you stressing verbs and nouns? 4) Listen to your intonation. Are you going down at the end of sentences and up for questions? 5) Ask a friend if you are pausing and chunking phrases. Or do you never pause? Or maybe pause unnaturally? 6) Check if you are using the rhythm of your own language or that of English. These are what I focus on in every pronunciation class.
