I have recently taken some licks in my review of a book named STRANGE FIRE, The Danger of Offending the Holy Spirit With Counterfeit Worship. Fortunately for John MacArthur and unfortunately for those of us seeking to be objective, John MacArthur has his loyal adherents and any disagreement with John is construed by these followers as a personal attack on MacArthur himself. Friends, it may be a terrible revelation to you. But John MacArthur does not necessarily speak ex cathedra like the Pope is said to do. Even at the risk of being misunderstood, I voice my deep concern over what I consider to be an obscene book filled with dirty stories . The old trick of the game both in politics or religion is this. If you find it difficult to support your point of view either theologically or biblically, you attack the personal life of the person who holds a view different than yours. The foundation of this book is cessasionism, i.e., that the so called sign gifts ceased forever when the Apostolic age came to a close. Most objective theologians whom I know would insist that this doctrine is extremely hard to prove either theologically or biblically. In this book, MacArthur has provided well-versed, hackneyed, unoriginal arguments. Thats fine with me. However, I cry out in dismay when he backs these arguments, and declares opposing views counterfeit. by pointing out sin and error in the lives of the people who, through the past century or so, have held to opinions which are different than his. This is argumentum ad hominem to its worst and might be better expected from a crooked politician rather than a minister of the Gospel.
