I have seen this article on a couple of friends time lines - TopicsExpress

I have seen this article on a couple of friends time lines recently and it has been really bugging me as it seems to be implying that you cant say that someone died from suicide which I find totally wrong. It seems to imply the correct answer to the cause of death of Robin Williams was in fact depression, which also shows, to me, quite an immature and ill-informed understanding of mental illness. Depression is the main but certainly not the only form mental illness can take and articles like this that imply it is almost a pretty certain outcome for sufferers offers little to no hope at all to those currently wading through their own battle to find the light in life again. But it also offers no alternative. No reference to severe anxiety disorders or personality disorders or schizophrenia. When people ask me how my first husband died, I want to be able to say suicide as it was his choice, for whatever reason and when he wasnt in his right mind. It is a decision I hope I never get poorly enough to understand but to take away that option by wanting specific indiviual diagnosis is unfair and emotionally painful for those of us left behind. If your loved one is murdered, you dont have to say they were killed because of an armed robbery or due to someones depravity. To say they were murdered is enough and gives the space to move the conversation on if you want to. I think it is the same with suicide. There are times when political correctness takes it too far and this article demonstrates one of them. There is nothing wrong with saying Robin Williams committed suicide. It is so sad that there is just nothing right about it either.
