I have seen this phenomenon at every single national meet Ive attended for the last 15 years. Seemingly good lifts turned down by incredibly picky judges early in the meet, with lighter weight classes, and then heavy weights getting a LOT more slack later in the meet. It gives the appearance of bias toward heavy/impressive weights. Here is my lifter Kat Lees 87kg second attempt C&J, turned down. Then look at Collin Burns (a great lifter, no rap on him at all) 167kg American Record snatch which got, Im assuming, at least two whites. https://youtube/watch?v=Qmr_Sh5MEWA&feature=youtu.be https://youtube/watch?v=AArFO5fKVHg Now I would have passed that lift of Burns, despite the clear, but very slight, in my opinion, elbow break and wobble. But that passes and Kats does not? We MUST do something to make our judging more consistent and fair. Kat was able to come back and hit a PR 91 jerk that did not look as good as the 87. Is it that we test new judges by throwing them into the fray at a national meet? Putting them under psychological pressure to be tough? I dont know, but Im sick to death of watching this every damn year.
