I have several Holidays that I really like. But my favorite family holiday is Thanksgiving and my favorite holiday season is Christmas. As the years have past Thanksgiving came to the top of my favorite family gathering list. I suppose for me it is the earthiness of the sights, smells, spices and rich autumn colors. I like the yellows, oranges, greens and browns found in the season. The weather has changed its not to cold but clearly there is a snap in the air a freshness to it. It is the season for sweaters, scarves, boots and sitting just a bit closer to everyone. It’s a time for board games, puzzles, fireplaces, old movies, blankets and stories you have heard a million times before but love hearing them new again. It’s a time for hand holding, hugs, and kisses on the cheeks as well as pats on the head. The sights and smells remind us of family members who have passed on. It’s a time for quiet walks a time for deep and profound reflection a time to be thankful. The crown to it all is Thanksgiving Dinner. Everyone sitting around the table looking at the best food the family can produce. Its perfection as you looking into the faces of family members you love beyond your own understanding. Everything is set and the time comes for the blessing on the food, the family, friends and a nation. In that moment you realize that you are looking at a Norman Rockwell Painting of your family. Click the picture in your mind is forever set never to be forgotten and always to be remembered. Dishes are passed and plates are piled high with food fit for the occasion. Everyone is now talking over each other about life, family and the meal. Slowly the meal takes over the conversation as the family basks in the moment of it all. Deep Fried Turkey, Spiral Sweet Sugared Ham, Thick Sage Turkey Dressing, Fresh Cranberry Orange Relish, Buttery Creamy Whipped Mashed Potatoes, Thick Rich Turkey Gravy, Rolls dipping with Butter, Broccoli Casserole, Maple Brown Sugar Sweet Potatoes with Maple Butter, Cool Whip Sour Cream Fruit Salad, Raspberry Cream Cheese Pretzel Salad, Deviled Eggs and Giant Black Olives for kids to put on their fingers. Apple Cranberry Sparkling Cider, Apple Pie with Ice Cream, Pumpkin Pie with Whipped Cream and Pecan Pie… For me it’s the longest meal of the year. I sit at the table longer, talk more and constantly take one more bite and taste of something… Then you hit that tipping point of being full or being uncomfortable it is a choice that everyone has to make… For me I just look for that happy place of being full just before uncomfortable. The food knocks the family out… some sleep in front of the fireplace, others nap upright on the couch and others have clean up duty and are busy cleaning and packing the food for leftovers that night. PJ’s are put on early and everyone can feel the closeness of their family. In that moment I will sit and think how wonderful it all is. I will wonder how many more times can I have this moment repeated in my life? Will I get ten more times or less, maybe twenty more times and more…Whatever the number is it will never be enough… I will think about my Grandparents and Parents who have gone before me thinking that my turn will be next… In that quiet moment I will consider what I am most thankful for above all else. I am Thankful that Families are Forever, its not just hope or a deeply profound belief that I have…It is hard wired into my very DNA. I have no doubt that my favorite time of year will be something that I will experience not just one day a year but everyday for an Eternity with the family I love completely. So yes I will run out of time here where time has power over me, but there in the Eternities I will conquer time we will all conquer time to have what we want most… Our Forever Family…
