I have some thoughts to share . I see a lot of people reducing , or should I say perceiving Kung fu as simply the fighting technique. I see this as a narrow and some what incorrect understanding of chinese martial arts and culture. It reduces the practice to what I call a military approach , as if thats all there is to CMA. I will concede that there are martial methods that are born out of china that are of this nature , but most are not . The overriding goal of chinese martial arts is a healthy self preservation or longevity, and to achieve this CMA is a mosaic of knowledge to preserve ones health and well being . In doing this TCMA (TRADITIONAL Chinese Martial Arts) incorporates knowledge for mental health / peace of mind . This can and is applied to martial actions yet practicing fighting methods alone will not produce this state of mind . Thus it must be cultivated in other ways , Meditation , philosophy , music and art serve to add this dimension. In a martial culture and training as much and possibly more so you will suffer injuries , and sickness that weakens you and your ability to practice the martial arts so , knowledge of TCM ( Traditional Chinese medicine ) becomes a spokA wheel . In learning this you learn how to heal and treat injuries as well as health practices and philosophy to keep your life force strong keeping you well and your vitality high . If we look at the basic goal of martial arts it is to stay alive, to preserve your health . I ask the question of what good is knowing how to fight and kill , if you die young from lifestyle illnesses , or live in a state of unhappiness and anxiety ? The practice of rejuvenation mind body wellness and inner peace is central TCMA . I may goal is to make all these available to you.
