I have spent the last 4 years feeding babies here in Mindanao....and given a lot of thought and care to how it is done. You are all entitled to your opinions but I would just like to say that the idea that feeding starving children makes them dependent is questionable....of course we wont really know how it affects the babies until many years after I am gone, but I believe they will remember that crazy old american chef who gave them food, and love, and books to read, and plants to plant and some education too....how do you teach someone to be resilient? Give them some hope that their life can get better, give them the idea that they can feed themselves with vegetable plants, as far as I am concerned you can NEVER teach someone to be reliant on charity they are already hungry, and you NEVER have to teach parents to love and care about their babies, they ALL already do that and do their best to care for them too. I dont complain when people choose not to donate or help me feed these babies and I never ask you all for money, and I dont argue with you when you say things I disagree with either, BUT dont think that we are somehow teaching these babies helplessness, thats something life has already taught them I can see it in their eyes when we first meet, and when we are done 12 weeks later i can see hope in their eyes and that is priceless. If you dont believe me just come to a feeding, it will only take 2 hours of your life and you can see for yourself the lessons we teach.
