I have this idea: - someone should make it! A cross-cultural educational exchange, collaboration, and pen-pal platform. The classroom is an excellent and native place for cross-cultural collaboration. There are opportunities today greater than ever before. In my experience of online classes, I feel like they can be improved a lot, especially with their impersonality. If the versatility services like Facebook and Skype can be seamlessly merged, these serves can serve the backbone of a much better sharing experience - one that I’m sure many teachers will be excited to use. If globally relative and sensitive curricula could be made, they can be a basis for exchange. This is really about redesigning the classroom- half technology and half education. Such a service can also build social awareness- Features could include the traditional Skype functionality, collaborative docs and wikis, and blogs, but also seamless syncing with google earth, individuals linked in a way similar to Facebook messagenger, and support to get to know someone from across the world - I also wonder how well friendships can develop across cultures I wonder what a collaborative classroom would look like - for example half of the students from Africa, half from America, all learning the same mathematics material. I wonder how to make this as easy as possible so that the most people will use it. Accessibility- I am under the impression that much of the global poor have cell-phones with text functionality. under such a platform, perhaps the poorest and wealthiest schools in the world can be linked together on an equal basis. this could do huge measures for common understanding of humanitarian issues around the world more than pity and also for education for the poor. I believe that technological advances have the opportunity to 1. be a leveraging force or equality (as Thomas Friedman argued in The World Is Flat), but also 2. a reflection and further manifestation of existing elitism. Whenever there is connection there is the opportunity for equal sharing - but it needs to be worked at from each side. Let’s call it Edugo- building the gobal classroom- it’ll revolutionize education. translators are certainly necessary to handle some language stuff, but a lot of transition can be done electronically with someone merely proofreading. someone should seriously make it. someone should seriously do. (I wish I was going to be a CS major T.T I’m going to go econ.)
