I have three favorite Urdu poets, poets primarily of loss and consequent grief. Interestingly, they also marked different phases of Urdu poetry. Mir Taqi Mir in 18th century is arguably the God of Urdu poetry and gave the shape to language. But it was only during Ghalib’s period when Urdu reached to its peak and Urdu poetry became more complex, meditative, and sparkling. And Jaun Elia in 20th century with his colloquial and profound philosophical insight wrote Urdu poetry to confront vulnerable existence or Nihilism. But one of these days with our increasing tendency to be overwhelmed only by English literature and the current decline in the quality of Urdu poetry by frustrated lovers -who only demonized their beloved- I am not very hopeful about its future. There is no doubt that many great poems lost within us everyday only for the reason that we do not know Urdu or even any other language purely.
