I have to give mad props to Miley Cyrus for what she did at the VMAs. It was such an emotional moment and I really hope that people start paying more attention to homelessness in this country. As a Social Welfare major, because I live in Berkeley/Oakland, and due to the fact that I was homeless at one point in my life, I know how hard it is to be out in the streets. Most of our homeless are foster kids who aged out, veterans who lost their benefits, mentally ill people left to fend for themselves, and immigrants with no where to go. We are also seeing more and more children and families, and in recent months, child refugees who are fleeing violence in their countries. So next time you see a homeless person, think twice about marginalizing them. They have already suffered enough, and they are human too.
