I have to head out and do that one thing that I hate the most... - TopicsExpress

I have to head out and do that one thing that I hate the most... euthanize a chick. Unfortunately, when you have a breed like the Araucana, there are occasionally genetic problems from both the limited gene pool and--in this case--side effects of breeding for rumplessness. This beautiful blue-gray chickie was born so rumpless (the tailbone and oil gland are absent) that the muscle that is supposed to attach from the anal sphincter to the tail base is gone... essential to opening up and pooping. So now at day 7, the poor little one is showing signs of distress, which is almost always the first sign of this condition. The poor sweetie has been pushing so hard that overnight it has developed a rectal prolapse, but *NO* sphincter dilation. I hope to never know what that feels like... The poor little one deserves to be at peace. I brought it into the world, and it is my responsibility to end the suffering before it gets any worse. All life has meaning... maybe this chick can help some other chick out there from going through this type of suffering. Namaste... ~Mama Cluck~
