I have to say, my favorite lesson I have taught the third graders - TopicsExpress

I have to say, my favorite lesson I have taught the third graders this year was todays about why we honor 9/11....what happened, why, and the current events going on today along similar lines. The kids were listening better and asking better questions than they have all year! Current events, ethics, and just understanding how the world interacts with each other just felt better to talk about than any standards I have to teach. The world, good, evil, and human decency....that is what felt good to talk about. They need to know about whats going on today, too! We talked about terrorism, the Taliban, ISIS, even a little on (even though you cant talk about religion) how the terrorists are distorting/abusing a decent religion with their extreme beliefs of how they are doing good by terrorizing. Had a talk about this is why police, military, government etc protect us and are to be respected. It really opened their eyes about what happened (some though that 9/11 was Barack Obamas birthday, or the celebration of the Civil War!!), and about why we still have to fight wars against terrorism nowadays, rather than just against some country with troops fighting troops now. We have to fight people that want to hurt innocents. So, we talked for AN HOUR about it, and it was a GREAT day. Then, we took a field trip so they could sing patriotic songs at a flag raising ceremony. Came back to school and made sedimentary rock sandwiches. It was a great day. (ok...that was long).
