I have to take some time to be thankful before I hop on board this flight to Chicago (to apartment search). I am usually not an emotional person, but yesterday after leaving the Anacostia Art Gallery & Boutique I had to fight back tears. Not of hurt, but of joy & reflection. I came back to drop off thank yous & pick up shirts for LeapforGhana.org, and something hit me. As some of you know from attendance/promotion on Saturday I performed with Midori Amae & Kareema Lifeisgood Wambuii at the Boutique in a Nina Simone tribute. It was a full house of artist, elders, and listeners. The performances were awesome, but what made it phenomenal was the whole experience of culture, remembrance, and FAMILY. All my life I have been outcast in some way, shape, or form. Either I wasnt hood enough, wasnt rich enough, wasnt black enough, was too black, wasnt macho enough, didnt play ball.....I mean you name it. But this past weekend I redefined what the word FAMILY means to me. I realized family is deeper than blood. It is a bond of individuals with a certain kind of internal energy that promotes support, togetherness, and love. When I said to Allison Randall that I was nervous before I performed. She said, Look around.....this is your FAMILY This year, I have been able to do remarkable things, but I realize that it would not be possible without my FAMILY. And that FAMILY includes my blood, but also these individuals that have reached out without question or hesitation to take a leap of faith on a kid with a dream. I would be tagging forever if I named all of them, so I wont. But know that I remember your input in my life. Whether it was a gift, words of wisdom, support, a hug, or we shared a laugh. You are my FAMILY, and I love you.
