I have to tell this story now that Ive stopped shaking. I had breakfast with Homer this morning, planning on going grocery shopping afterwards. I was in Broken Arrow (about ten miles from where I live) and I had a wild hair. There wasnt much on my list and Im tired of shopping at Reasors. Walmart isnt my thing unless my list goes something like... socks, thumb drive, milk... you get the drift, so I decided to go to Aldis. No big deal. Quick in and out. Right? I pulled in and as luck would have it, there were maybe 6 cars in the lot. When I approached the carts, there were two older men standing there. In case you dont know, at Aldis you have to put a quarter in the cart to release it. When you return the cart, your quarter pops out. No biggie. Except it was. An elderly man was wrestling with the cart, trying to retrieve his quarter. The man beside him was waiting for his turn at the carts, but his patience was wearing thin. I had my quarter in my hand. Finally, the waiting man said, Why dont you just give me the damned cart? Its only a quarter. The man wrestling with the cart looked up and said, Maybe, but its MY damned quarter. Impatient man said, Look, Ive got somewhere to be and Im tired of waiting. Get the hell out of the way. I took a step back. Wrestling man reaches down and thats when I noticed he had a gun in a leather holster, strapped to his belt. He unsnapped the top of the holster and said, You get out of the way. I stood there blinking like an idiot, because we were about to have a gunfight at the OK cart corral. Impatient man was not backing down. I have no idea what possessed me to do what I did next. I reached out and handed the wrestling man my quarter. He looked at me and I said, This ones on me. Have a good day. He stood there a minute, then walked away from the cart. Impatient man didnt say a word. He took the cart and went inside the store while I stood outside and hyperventilated. The world is getting weirder my friends.
