I have to tell you that I really do not take take selfies and I despise selfies. Why? Because I refuse to believe that this is all that we can offer to the world every day. Is there a story behind your face? Is there a story behind your pout? In the bathroom? With your cat? With your instafood? I do not believe that taking these... that taking random meaningless photos of yourself really contributes to the vision of the i and the vision of the world you are trying to construct. Unless theres a story behind your selfie, I will not like it. I wish to unfriend all those who are taking selfies but then I will be left with no one in Facebook. Because what I sense is that we are building a large online admiration club. You like my selfie and I like yours. We are recognizing each other without really any basis for the recognition. We are promoting a culture of mediocrity. And Id like to believe that you are worth more than the hundred plus likes you receive just because of how your face and how your clothes look like for that moment. But that is the point is, really. We are looking for likes. We are looking for recognition. We are looking for a place in the world. And this is where the distressing thought is. I sense that this generation is characterized by angst. People are frustrated. People are angry. And I quote Tyler Durden. He said in the film, we are born without without a great war. We are born without a great depression. Our battle is a spiritual war. Our great depression is our lives. We are frustrated because we were promised that we can become billionaires and astronauts and Victorias Secret models. And were slowly realizing that we cant be all of those things, but we fall short on this thought, because we continue with the angst to wait. We are waiting for the moment that we were promised. We are waiting for that moment in time, but the truth is that moment will not come unless you seize the moment yourself. Czarina Medina-Guce, #TEDxADMU
