I have to vent and I probably will make some people really mad. Feel free to unfriend me if this makes you mad, because I feel VERY STRONGLY about this. I dont watch football, and I dont even know who Adrian Peterson is. I am not discussing this regarding his celebrity status, but regarding how important it is for a child to have a trusting relationship with his dad. Child abuse breaks the bond of trust between a small, impressionable child and his father. Dads are VERY important to all children, but especially to little boys. The role of the father is to be a loving protector and provider, not an angry attacker. I thank God that my father was and still is loving and protective of both me and my son. I really cant believe how many people are still supporting this Peterson beating by saying, I was spanked as a kid and I turned out just fine. If you are supporting this act of stripping off the childs pants and ripping his scrotum with a stick, then sorry, but you did not turn out just fine! According to officials regarding Peterson, The beating allegedly resulted in numerous injuries to the child, including CUTS AND BRUISES TO THE CHILD’S BACK, BUTTOCKS, ANKLES, LEGS AND SCROTUM, ALONG WITH DEFENSIVE WOUNDS TO THE CHILD’S HANDS. Peterson pulled the childs pants down in order to make it worse. If one more person says, Spare the rod and spoil the child in support of ripping a childs backside until it is bleeding, I think I may have to hit them over the head with a Bible. (Not seriously, but the thought made me smile.) Spare the rod is not the only verse in the Bible about discipline. Hasnt anyone ever heard about context? A rod doesnt mean you must hit them with a rod every time you discipline them. People often quote that verse, but ignore another important verse: Ephesians 6:4 says, And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Beating a child until they BLEED is a good way to provoke them. Another good verse is, Colossians 3:21 Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged. I am hoping that some of these people supporting Peterson are simply unaware of the details of the beating. You dont have to choose one extreme or the other. I dont think it is a good idea to make spanking illegal, but I sure dont think it is a good idea to support child abuse either! There is a way to spank a child without it turning into a bloody mess. I am not against spanking when it is done properly and with love. But if someone abuses their child, chances are that they will start a chain reaction and their child will become an abusive parent as well. And if you think child abuse is fine and dandy, then please unfriend me now. :)
