I have two questions to ask those who consider themselves responsible and ethical breeders. I do not want to debate what I consider a responsible breeder is, so for the sake of this question lets just say a responsible/ethical breeder is someone that breeds ( any breed) for the betterment of that breed. So here are the questions.... 1.) If you sold a dog as a SHOW dog ( your prices for show and companion are different) and that dogs testicle hasnt dropped by the time he reaches a year old. Two vets have determined that this is a genetic issue and the owner asks you to refund the difference as he cant be show rendering him a pet. Would you? 2.) Would you demand that before doing so this person must collect the dog and give you the collection for future use in your breeding program? Keeping in mind that some very good research on canine genetics suggest a polygenic inheritance, but there is also contradicting thought does challenge this conclusion. The presence of cryptorchidism is believed to fall anywhere from .8% up to 67% in male dogs. A very interesting study that ties cryptorchidism with other inheritable defects, especially patellar subluxation and hip displaysia. The crypt-orchid dog should be neutered because the retained abdominal testicle may lead to future tumor growth or testicular torsion. From what I read the chance for tumors may be 10 times higher on retained testicles than on normally descended testicles. We must keep in mind that if left intact, monocryptorchid dogs can and will breed. With the belief that this is a recessive trait ( there fore in order for it to appear it must be in both sides of the pedigree) all the offspring will be at best carries. The general rule of my vet, is to wait to neuter until the dog is 9-12 months old if you consider the dog to be show potential just in case its a delayed decension. Keeping in mind that delayed decension is still considered cryptochidism and should not be breed.
