"I have worked in companies that treated their employees as commodities in which a “low unit cost strategy” was employed, communication was non-existent, performance appraisals were used to limit compensation increases rather than to coach, reward, develop and set objectives, people were not provided with developmental or advancement opportunities….it was just a job. In this environment it is hard to get them “engaged”. I’ve also worked in companies that treated their employees as valuable assets in which a “differentiation strategy” was employed and they treated the employees with equal respect from top to bottom, sincerely sought out and listened to their ideas, empowered them to make decisions to serve the customer, looked for opportunities to give them positive reinforcement rather than beat them down, paid them in the top 33% of market, invested in their coaching, mentoring, training and development, provided them with developmental and advancement opportunities, held town hall meetings and gave them a vision of where the company was going and the part they played in achieving the vision and, in doing all of this gave them hope for a better future for them and their families. In the latter case it was easy to get them engaged....it was a career." ~William Brennan CPA, CGMA, MBA
