I heard it again today, as I have heard it many times, so many that it isnt worth counting: The sentiment that being raped is part of the justice of American prison. Not only is it okay that certain prisoners are raped while in jail, its a actually a good thing, because those guys are getting what they deserve. Its strongly implied that certain criminals should spend time in jail precisely *because* they will be raped: Thats why they should go to jail; thats the point of sending them. There are many reasons why this sentiment is bad, but what strikes me as most insane about it is not that we accept that being raped could be a just punishment, but rather that our society blithely accepts that people in prisons *become rapists*. Obviously, someone is administering this justice. As the popular legends tell it, *lots* of men are doing the administering. Yes: According to the American prison mythology (however accurate or inaccurate that mythology may be), people who are not rapists when they go into prison *become rapists* while there. If feel like this should be restated for emphasis, perhaps in its own paragraph, with some exclamatory characters, like so: ...And we think that sending people there is going to have some sort of rehabilitating effect on them? We think that communities will be improved by sending their men through a system that turns people into rapists? ... ... April fools! :D
