I hope everyone had a very happy Easter. This past week was up and down for me. Over the last three years, I seemed to take two or three steps back for every step forward with all the treatment and surgeries I experienced. Lately, however, I take several steps forward and have only the occasional step backward. I visited with my gynecology oncologist on Tuesday for my annual exam. We talked again about my breast cancer gene and a new study that has come out recently linking the gene to very rare but deadly uterine tumors. He said the risk is very low and saw no need for me to have more surgery because of this unless I chose to. That was a relief. But if you or anyone who reads this find(s) out there is a close relative in your family with the gene, please consider getting tested. When you know better, you do better. (Thats my very feeble attempt to get on a soapbox). On Wednesday, I went for what some like to call the finishing touches following reconstructive surgery, areola repigmentation. I’ve had it done before but after a series of unfortunate incidents on my right breast, the work that was done before was no longer. I wouldn’t say it was as painful as last time but it wasn’t the best feeling in the world. To say I’m extremely happy with the results is an understatement. On Thursday afternoon, I started to feel a little under the weather; I had a horrible headache and felt like I had a fever and chills. Friday morning I felt somewhat better and when I went to take a shower, I noticed the skin underneath the lat flap scar on my back was red and splotchy and warm to the touch. I thought about going to urgent care but after talking to a friend I called my surgeon. More than likely it’s an infection so I’m now on a ten-day round of antibiotics. I guess it wasn’t in the cards to get to the three-year mark from my last chemo without a little bit of drama. But thats okay. No matter how I’m feeling, I can’t wait to celebrate that.
